Okay, let’s talk timelines: the part of wedding planning that somehow feels both exciting and a little intimidating. There are so many moving pieces to fit into one day: getting ready, portraits, the ceremony, the party, and of course, actually enjoying the fact that you’re getting married!
If you’ve started piecing together your wedding timeline and are feeling a little overwhelmed, you are definitely not alone. Figuring out how much time you need for photos can feel tricky, especially when you’re also trying to plan all of the other important moments of your day.
The good news? Your wedding day is not a photoshoot! Your timeline should be built around you, your priorities, and the experience you want to have. As a wedding photographer, my job is to capture the day you create—not make your day revolve around the photos. However, a little planning ahead can make your day feel much more relaxed and ensure you have time for the moments you’ll want to remember forever.
Here are some tips for creating a wedding timeline that allows for beautiful, stress-free photos!

Every couple has different priorities for their wedding day. Some couples dream of slow, quiet moments together before the ceremony, while others want to spend every second soaking in time with their friends and family.
Before building your timeline, think about what moments matter most to you.
Do you want:
There is no “perfect” wedding timeline because every wedding day looks different. The best timeline is one that reflects what you care about most. If you’d like some ideas on some of my must-have photos, check out this blog!

One of the biggest timeline decisions couples make is whether or not to do a first look. A first look can be a beautiful way to slow down and have a private moment together before the excitement begins. It can also give you more flexibility with photos throughout the day.
Of course, skipping the first look is also a wonderful option! Some couples have always dreamed of seeing each other for the first time while walking down the aisle, and that moment can be incredibly emotional.
If you’re still deciding if a first look is right for you, check out this blog for a more in-depth guide!
This is probably one of the biggest questions couples have when planning their wedding timeline. The answer? It depends, but here are some general timeframes I recommend:
Detail Photos: 30–45 minutes
These are the little details that make your wedding day unique! Think invitations, rings, shoes, jewelry, perfume, vows, and any special items you want photographed.
Getting Ready Photos: 10 minutes to full coverage
Some couples want the entire getting ready process documented, while others just want those final moments like putting on jewelry, zipping the dress, or sharing a first look with family or bridesmaids.
First Look (if you have one): 10–15 minutes
A sweet, private moment between you and your partner (and yes, I’ll be capturing all the emotions!).
Wedding Party Photos: About 20 minutes
The faster we can get everyone together and focused, the faster everyone can get to celebrating!
Family Photos: 15–20 minutes
Having a list prepared ahead of time makes this process smooth and stress-free.
Couple Portraits: About 30 minutes
This is your time to step away, breathe, and enjoy a few quiet moments together.
Reception Events: About 1.5 hours
This allows time for important moments like first dances, speeches, cake cutting, and other special traditions.

If there is one piece of timeline advice I can give every couple, it’s this: give yourself more time than you think you need. Wedding days have so many moving parts. Someone might need help getting ready, family members might take a little longer to gather, or you might simply want an extra minute to soak in the fact that this is actually happening!
A rushed timeline can make the day feel stressful, while a little extra breathing room allows you to actually enjoy each moment. Trust me, those few extra minutes are worth it.

The little details are often some of my favorite things to photograph because they tell the story of your wedding day. Before your wedding, gather any details you want photographed in one place so they are ready when your photographer arrives.
Some ideas include:
Also, take some time before your wedding day to think about any specific photos you want. Is there a spot at your venue you’ve always loved? Is there a family photo you absolutely want? Let your photographer know ahead of time so those moments can be built into your timeline.

One of the biggest factors that impacts your wedding photos is something you can’t control: the sun! Lighting changes throughout the day and can completely change the feeling of your photos. Those dreamy, glowing sunset portraits everyone loves? Those usually happen during golden hour, right before sunset.
Depending on your wedding season, sunset can happen at very different times. Summer weddings may have a later sunset, while winter weddings have much shorter days. Read this blog to determine which wedding season is right for you!
Working with your photographer to plan around natural light can help make sure you get those romantic portraits without feeling like you’re missing out on your celebration.
I know it can be easy to get caught up in making sure you get every single photo you’ve seen on Pinterest or Instagram. But remember, your wedding is about so much more than the pictures. It’s about marrying your best friend, celebrating with the people you love, and being fully present in one of the biggest moments of your life. So let me worry about getting the perfect photos and you just focus on enjoying the moment! The best photos happen that way. Laugh with your friends, take in the room, dance a little longer, hold your partner’s hand—those genuine moments are the ones you’ll treasure forever.

Your photos should be a reflection of the day—not the reason you’re having it. Don’t build your entire wedding day around photos. Build your wedding day around the experience you want to have. A thoughtful timeline simply gives you the freedom to slow down, enjoy every moment, and know that the memories you care about most are being captured along the way.
