So, you’re getting engaged! Or maybe you’re already engaged and starting to plan your photos. Either way, congratulations! This is such an exciting season of life, and if you’re thinking about having it photographed, you might be wondering: Should you hire a photographer to capture the proposal itself, or should you plan an engagement photo session afterward?
The good news? There’s no wrong answer! Proposal photography and engagement sessions capture two very different parts of your story, and both have something special to offer. Let’s talk about the differences, what to consider when planning each one, and how to decide which is right for you.

When you pop the question, proposal photography is all about capturing that once-in-a-lifetime moment. Think of the surprise, the happy tears, the reaction, and that first hug after the big question. These are the moments you can’t exactly recreate, which is what makes photographing them so special!!

Most surprise proposals involve a little behind-the-scenes planning between you and your photographer. We’ll talk through your vision, determine a location, figure out the timing, and make a plan for where I’ll be positioned so I can capture the moment without giving anything away.
Whether you’re planning a romantic proposal at a favorite spot in Baltimore, a waterfront moment in Maryland, or something more personal to your relationship, the goal is to make the experience feel natural and true to you.
After the proposal, there’s usually time for a few portraits together while you’re still soaking it all in. You’ll have photos of the big moment itself and some beautiful images of the two of you celebrating your new engagement.
The biggest benefit? You get to remember the moment exactly as it happened. There’s something so special about seeing your partner’s reaction, the look on your faces, and all the little details you might have missed in the excitement.
It’s also a wonderful option if you love candid, emotional photos or want to give your partner a meaningful surprise they’ll be able to look back on for years to come.
The main thing to remember is that surprise proposals require some coordination! We’ll need to plan around the location, lighting, timing, and how to keep everything a secret. Having a photographer there doesn’t mean you have to make the moment feel staged. In fact, the best proposal photos often come from a thoughtful photography plan that leaves plenty of room for the real emotions to unfold (and me hiding off to the side to keep the surprise!)

Already engaged? An engagement session is a chance to celebrate this season of your relationship and have some beautiful photos together before the wedding planning whirlwind takes over.
Unlike proposal photography, an engagement session is planned in advance with both of you involved. You get to choose the location, coordinate outfits, and create an experience that reflects your personality and relationship.
This is where we get to have a little fun! Maybe you want romantic photos in a garden, a walk through your favorite Baltimore neighborhood, or a cozy session somewhere that feels like your own little world. Your engagement photos don’t have to look like anyone else’s. They should feel like you.
We’ll work together to find a location and style that fits your vision, and I’ll guide you throughout the session so you don’t have to worry about knowing exactly what to do in front of the camera.
And if you’re already thinking about outfits, I’ve got you covered! Check out this blog for tips on coordinating outfits, choosing colors, and finding a look that feels like you.
And if you’re not quite sure what to do once you’re in front of the camera? Don’t worry, you don’t have to show up knowing how to pose! This blog has more tips to help you feel comfortable and prepared before your session.
One of my favorite things about engagement sessions is that you get time to slow down and enjoy being engaged. Wedding planning can get busy quickly, and a session gives you an excuse to dress up, spend time together, and celebrate what’s happening right now.
You’ll also get a gallery of photos you can use for save-the-dates, your wedding website, guest books, or simply to frame at home. And if you’re feeling a little nervous about being photographed on your wedding day, an engagement session is a great way for us to get to know each other and help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera before the big day. Think of it as a little test run!

Absolutely! In fact, the two can complement each other beautifully.
Proposal photography captures the surprise and emotion of the moment you become engaged. An engagement session gives you more time to celebrate afterward and create photos that reflect your personalities and style.
If your budget allows for both, they offer two completely different experiences and sets of memories. You don’t need both, though. If you care most about documenting the proposal itself, focus on that. If you’d rather have a relaxed, planned session with photos you can use throughout the wedding-planning process, an engagement session may be the better fit.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. It really comes down to what matters most to you!!

The best time for engagement photos is whenever you want to celebrate this season of life! That said, a few things can help you decide when to schedule your session.
Think about the season. Spring brings fresh blooms and greenery, summer offers long evenings, fall gives you those beautiful warm colors, and winter can be perfect for cozy, romantic photos.
Consider your wedding timeline. If you want to use your engagement photos for save-the-dates or your wedding website, you’ll want to schedule your session early enough to have your gallery ready before you need it.
Pay attention to the light. I love working with soft, natural light, which is one reason sessions often work beautifully in the late afternoon or early evening. The ideal timing will depend on your location and the season, so we’ll figure out what makes the most sense for your session.
And remember, you don’t have to rush! Your engagement photos should feel like an enjoyable part of the experience, not another item to check off your wedding-planning list.
Still deciding? Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
At the end of the day, my biggest piece of advice is to choose the experience that feels most meaningful to you as a couple. Every relationship is different, and there’s no right or wrong way to capture this season of your life. Whether you’re secretly planning to document the surprise of a proposal or planning an engagement session together, what matters most is having photos that you love.
And if you’re still not sure which option is right for you, let’s talk about it! I’d love to hear what you’re envisioning and help you figure out what makes the most sense for your story. If you’re looking for a Baltimore wedding photographer to capture your proposal or engagement, reach out!!
